I must say that I have taken quite kindly to the work at home lifestyle. Things are moving along very smoothly so far. Although I haven't gotten everything ironed out yet, much work has come my way. I feel very fortunate to have gotten so much help from the community at Helium.
I have made money other than from the Helium site. I am not counting that towards the my income though. The reason for that is I want to see if enough money can be made on Helium that I wouldn't have to go find an outside job. The earnings are really adding up. The funny thing is that I haven't really done that much with it. I have taken a fairly leisurely stand with it, my house is clean, my laundry is done, the frig is full and my man is happy.
I have also written a few thing on Associated Content. That is not my main interest though. I wrote an article the other day about the snowfall in Cecil County. I was left a comment, though the person didn't want me to know who they were. It pretty much criticized me for writing to that site and the fact that freelance writers are "unemployed". This may be true in their eyes. I am guessing it is someone that didn't like my stand on another issue in Cecil County and seem to be following my articles just to leave dumb remarks like that.
As I thought about the comment, at first it bothered me. Maybe they were right. Then I thought, no, they aren't right. Here is why. I went for lunch today with some of the girls that I used to work with. They are not happy at their place of employment. They were worn out and tired. They are all seeking other employment. Yet, there I was in the midst of them thinking how great my life is right now.
If I were truly unemployed, I wouldn't have any money coming in. Since I do have a rather large number of places that I write to among other things, my eggs aren't all in one basket. While I write, I take it seriously because someone, somewhere might read it. At the same time, I don't have to do it when someone tells me to. I get up when I want, which is usually about the same time I would have to go to work. My commute consists of about ten steps from the bedroom to my office. I have only filled my tank up once and that was over a week ago. If I were still going out of the house to work, well, I would have filled up about three times by now. I am not spending massive amounts of money on snacks, drinks and lunches. I have it all right here and it costs a lot less to buy. I can take a break when I feel the need to and I don't have to explain to anyone what I was doing when I was away from my desk. The best part is that I don't have the chest pains that I was getting when I went out to work. I also don't get sick every five seconds because someone else came to work sick. My headaches, well, Ihave only had one since I haven't been at work. I used to get at least one per day. No one is talking to loud and breaking my concentration and I can listen to my music all day long and no one is going to have a hissy fit about it. Not to mention that I have supplies that work.
In other words, this lifestyle is definitely worth the attempt. If I don't make it then I don't. But I have a sneaky feeling that I just might after all!

We seem to be kindred spirits in the attempt to make our love of writing our full time gig. I read one of your Helium articles, then linked here, and I'm glad I did. Interested to see what you have to say now that you're a few months into it.
ReplyDeleteBravo!! I definitely hate it when people think I am unemployed. They should try doing what we do. I have my own work schedule, etc. but I love the flexibility. No boss to complain about taking off to take the kids to the dentist. Last person who said I needed a job got a simple remark.."I believe a paycheck constitutes a job."
ReplyDeleteI think they just get jealous sometimes. Keep up the great work at Helium. I would love to know where else you write besides Helium and AC. I have a few articles at Triond.com and some at Epinions.com. Are there other sites?

I stumbled upon your article about making money with "empty titles" on Helium, which led me to your blog. Just wanted to say that the comment left about freelance writers being unemployed probably stems from the fact that the person isn't happy with their own job or life circumstances. There are millions of us out here who desire such a life. I, for one, wish you well in your endeavor. From your articles you obviously have the talent to make it happen. So... Bravo for you! Go after your dreams.
ReplyDeleteKudoos to you! I just read one of your articles on Helium, Why grandparents raising grandchildren are heroic. I am one of those grandparents you are speaking of and I would like to say "thank you!" you made my morning! Is there an affiliate link for Helium? Please send it to me and I will join under you. I too am a freelance writer, forced to so that I can once again, stay home and raise children! Money is very tight and I just love to write and I love my grand kids. I wish this opportunity was around 20 years ago when I was raising my children!
